The state of Piauí – supposed to be the land of the “macho men” – will be taken here as a basic reference in an attempt to understand the changes and the new features of the Brazilian system of sexual classification in the “age of globalization”. We will present a partial result of a qualitative research that had tried to characterize homosexual biographical narratives, particularly in regard to what homosexual people mean by family, love, gender, and affective relationships. Sex differences are culturally constructed and transformed into hierarchies and social inequalities. We will try to propose some theoretical and methodological frameworks to challenge these inequalities and instigate the discussion about homosexual experiences in a peripheral context. Keywords: Family, love, gender, sexuality, biographies, PiauíDownloads
